about

"Plate 52" aka "The One On The Left Is Me" is the original Crust demo cassette. The cover art was done by Jay Krieger and it was simply a picture of 2 little Asian girls in nurse uniforms. He found the picture in the attic of Mosquito Beach, a condemned house squatted in on the bank of a creek (later the title of a Crust song). The fidelity isn't amazing. It was recorded at home on a Tascam 4-track R2R with only 4 crappy microphones. I don't remember what we mixed to, I think it predates us owning an Ampex 2 track. The cassettes were duplicated at Sound Recorders onto voice-grade cassettes. Any high-end that did exist was lost there. Most of these songs showed up on the first 2 records rerecorded on real equipment, except for Charlie, which was only remixed from the original. Pump Chili was later re-released by Seymour Glass and distributed with BananaFish Magazine. The last 3 songs were never re-recorded and seldom performed, although we once did a 45-minute version of Happy Christian live. The three extra demo tracks have never seen the light of day before, Stations of the Cross and Power of the Purse were recorded with tape loops on our Tascam 4 Track.
